Overview

Iowa's Medical Cannabidiol Program, run by the Department of Health and Human Services, has been operational since 2018. It allows registered patients to buy state-approved extract products, not botanical cannabis.

Patients are limited to 4.5 grams of THC every 90 days, with a waiver available. House File 990, signed in June 2026, raised the number of dispensaries from five to ten and created a path for out-of-state patients. About 20,000 Iowans are registered.
