Overview
Pennsylvania allows medical marijuana only; adult-use (recreational) sales aren't legal.
Who qualifies
- Pennsylvania resident with a serious medical condition, including chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, cancer, epilepsy, MS and others on the state list
- Certification from a practitioner registered with the program
Step-by-step: how to apply
- Register with the Medical Marijuana Registry online.
- Get certified by a registered practitioner.
- Pay the ID card fee and buy at any medical dispensary.
How much it costs
- State fee: $50 (reduced for financial hardship)
- Doctor visit: set by the practitioner or clinic, not the state, and usually not covered by insurance. Compare a few registered providers, including telehealth where the state allows it.
Renewal
Check the Department of Health for current terms. Set a reminder before your certification or card expires so you don't lose access.
Where to buy
Once you're registered, you can buy from licensed medical dispensaries in Pennsylvania. Only buy from state-licensed businesses; check the Pennsylvania Department of Health Medical Marijuana Program for licensed locations.
Official program
Apply and check current rules directly with the Pennsylvania Department of Health Medical Marijuana Program. For business licensing in Pennsylvania, see our Pennsylvania marijuana license guide, or browse medical card guides for every state.
