Overview
Ohio allows both adult-use and medical cannabis. A medical card is still worth having for patients who want access to the medical program's protections and products.
Who qualifies
- Ohio resident with a qualifying condition, including chronic pain, cancer, epilepsy, PTSD, Crohn's disease, MS, Parkinson's and others on the state list
- Recommendation from a physician with a certificate to recommend
Step-by-step: how to apply
- See a certified physician who registers you with the state.
- Activate your patient registration online.
- Buy at any medical or dual-use dispensary.
How much it costs
- State fee: No state fee (eliminated in 2024)
- Doctor visit: set by the practitioner or clinic, not the state, and usually not covered by insurance. Compare a few registered providers, including telehealth where the state allows it.
Renewal
Annually, with physician renewal. Set a reminder before your certification or card expires so you don't lose access.
Where to buy
Once you're registered, you can buy from licensed medical dispensaries in Ohio. Only buy from state-licensed businesses; check the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control for licensed locations.
Official program
Apply and check current rules directly with the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control. For business licensing in Ohio, see our Ohio marijuana license guide, or browse medical card guides for every state.
