Overview
New York allows both adult-use and medical cannabis. The medical program is open to any condition a registered practitioner believes cannabis can help.
Who qualifies
- Any condition a New York-registered practitioner believes cannabis can help treat (the fixed list of qualifying conditions was removed in 2022)
- Practitioners must complete state-required training and register with OCM
Step-by-step: how to apply
- Visit a registered practitioner, in person or by telehealth, and get a certification.
- Register online with the OCM Medical Cannabis Program.
- Use your temporary registration with a photo ID to buy at a Registered Organization dispensary while your card arrives.
How much it costs
- State fee: No state registration fee
- Doctor visit: set by the practitioner or clinic, not the state, and usually not covered by insurance. Compare a few registered providers, including telehealth where the state allows it.
Renewal
Per your practitioner's certification term. Set a reminder before your certification or card expires so you don't lose access.
Where to buy
Once you're registered, you can buy from licensed medical dispensaries in New York. Only buy from state-licensed businesses; check the NY Office of Cannabis Management: Medical cannabis patients for licensed locations.
Official program
Apply and check current rules directly with the NY Office of Cannabis Management: Medical cannabis patients. For business licensing in New York, see our New York marijuana license guide, or browse medical card guides for every state.
