Overview
Illinois allows both adult-use and medical cannabis. Registered medical patients pay lower taxes than adult-use buyers and can buy at medical dispensaries.
Who qualifies
- Illinois resident with a qualifying condition, such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, chronic pain, migraines, autism and others on the state list
- Certification from an Illinois-licensed physician, physician assistant or advanced practice nurse
Step-by-step: how to apply
- Get a written certification from a qualifying health care professional.
- Apply online with the Illinois Department of Public Health's Medical Cannabis Patient Program.
- Choose a 1-, 2- or 3-year card and pay the fee.
- Use your provisional registration to buy at a medical dispensary while the card is processed.
How much it costs
- State fee: $50 (1 yr), $100 (2 yr), $125 (3 yr)
- Doctor visit: set by the practitioner or clinic, not the state, and usually not covered by insurance. Compare a few registered providers, including telehealth where the state allows it.
Renewal
Every 1, 2 or 3 years, by card term chosen. Set a reminder before your certification or card expires so you don't lose access.
Where to buy
Once you're registered, you can buy from licensed medical dispensaries in Illinois. Only buy from state-licensed businesses; check the Illinois Department of Public Health Medical Cannabis Patient Program for licensed locations.
