Overview
California allows both adult-use and medical cannabis. A state Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) is optional, but it exempts you from state sales tax on medical cannabis.
Who qualifies
- California resident with a physician's recommendation for a serious medical condition (including cancer, chronic pain, glaucoma, migraine, seizures and others) or any condition that limits major life activities
- Patients 18 and older; minors need a parent or guardian
Step-by-step: how to apply
- Get a written recommendation from a California-licensed physician.
- Apply for a state Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) through your county health department.
- Provide proof of residency, ID and the fee.
- The card exempts you from state sales tax on medical cannabis at licensed retailers.
How much it costs
- State fee: Up to $100 (reduced for Medi-Cal)
- Doctor visit: set by the practitioner or clinic, not the state, and usually not covered by insurance. Compare a few registered providers, including telehealth where the state allows it.
Renewal
Annually, through your county. Set a reminder before your certification or card expires so you don't lose access.
Where to buy
Once you're registered, you can buy from licensed medical dispensaries in California. Only buy from state-licensed businesses; check the California CDPH Medical Marijuana ID Card Program for licensed locations.
